Questions and Answers about the Spokane Indians

What did their writing look like?
spacer

The Plateau Indians did not have writing. This means that we don't know what they thought or believed in their own words as they experienced it at the time. But a strong oral tradition of passing down stories, did preserve some of their experiences.

The first historical description we have about them happened in the sunny October days in 1805, when the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the Southern part of the Plateau Indian region.

Today, in an attempt to preserve the Spokane language, linguists have used symbols from the International Phonetic Alphabet [IPA] to write down the words of the Spokane language. They could not use the ordinary English alphabet because the Spokane language contains many sounds that are not used in the Western European alphabet.
