1200-1600 : Culture changes from the West
spacer

During the long period from 1200-1600s, changes to the Plateau Culture seemed to come from the West. The Plateau area was influenced by the highly specialized Northwest Coast culture of the Indians living on the West Coast of Washington and Oregon.

Some of these influences include mat and plank houses, wood carving and bone carvings with pictures of animals on them. And certain burial customs using cremation and also scaffold burial.

Part of this diffusion was possibly brought about by a Chinook group, the Wishram, who migrated from the coast up the Columbia, and settled in the area near the Dalles.
