The temperature for the last several thousand years has been similar to what it is today.
Temperatures range from very cold in winter to very hot in summer.
There is not much rain during the summer; the Columbia Plateau is the most northern desert in North America. In the winter snow accumulates in the mountains.
What made this area different from almost all
other desert regions in the world, is that even though the land is very dry,
the rivers were full and teeming with salmon and other fish. The Plateau Indians, though they lived in
a relatively barren region, were blessed with easy and dependable access to food.
