Questions and Answers about the Spokane Indians

what changes happened prior to the Europeans?
spacer

Plateau Indian Culture was never static. Changes had been happening prior to the coming of the Europeans. But with the coming of the Europeans (also called "White Man", or "Whites") and their civilization, the changes came faster and faster.

These changes ultimately led to the destruction of the traditional Plateau Culture.

Even before European people came into the area, changes had happened that could be traced to the new culture:
  • changes associated with the arrival of the horse in the beginning of the 18th century
  • changes caused by epidemics from 1780 onward - smallpox, measles, etc.
  • changes caused by the arrival of new ideas. There were challenges to the fundamental religious ideas of their place in the world. New eschatological ideas, led to the Prophet Dance movement.
