who were the missionaries?

Both Catholic and Protestant missionaries made early trips into the area to help and to convert the Native Americans.

While missionaries were usually well intentioned, they sought actively to change the religion and some of the basic traditional practices of the people who had lived in the area for thousand of years.
The were one of the forces that broke down the traditional Plateau culture.
