What language did their neighbors speak?

The Indians of the Plateau speak four different kinds of languages : Salish, Sahaptian, Klamath and Kootenai. Most of Plateau groups speak Salishan and Sahaptian. The Spokanes spoke Salish.

The Salish speaking tribes in the Plateau Region were - the Spokanes , Okanagon , Lake, Wenatchee, Sanpoil, Nespelim, Kalispel, Pend d'Oreille, Coeur d'Alene, and Flathead.

The Sahaptin speaking tribes in the Plateau Region were - the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Yakima, and Wallawalla.

The Klamath speaking tribes in the Plateau Region were - the KlamathModoc (Lutuami).

The Kutenai speaking tribes in the Plateau Region were the Kutenai.
