from the Journals of LEWIS and CLARK

Lewis and Clark In 1804, Lewis and Clark, were sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore a land route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific. In a Journey lasting over two years, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and a party of over 30 other people traveled over 4000 miles of wilderness. Apart from one early death due to illness, there were no deaths on the expedition.

The group included Sacajawea, a Shoshone woman of seventeen, her baby just a few months old, Toby, a black man, and a dog.

Lewis and Clark were the first Europeans to pass through the region inhabited by the Plateau Indians. They were the first to write down impressions on seeing the Plateau Indians. They would not have survived without the help and care of the local Native Americans.
