a note about The Indian Tribes of Washington Territory

A note about this Document...
Back to the Document

This text is an Internet version of an article originally published in a US Government Report.

The article contains interesting information about the culture of Native Americans in Washington Territory at an early time in their contact with the Europeans. Gibbs travelled through Eastern Washington when contact with Europeans had barely begun. The article also contains a useful summary of population estimates of the time.

But the pamphlet reflects its time. Even though it is sympathetic to Native Americans, it assumes that they will have to be displaced to make way for the coming European civilization. The author, George Gibbs, is very specific on the steps that needs to be taken to that end.

Unlike scholarly articles today, the article is sometimes judgmental about the character of the Native Americans.

A SPECIAL NOTE for WELLPINIT STUDENTS

This pamphlet contains an interesting and appreciative section specifically on the Spokane Indians.
