Who Is?
(famous Native Americans)
There are many famous Native Americans.
Here are some of them, and why they are famous.
They are arranged alphabetically.

Crazy Horse
|
A leader of the Oglala Sioux. On June 25, 1876 he
defeated General George A. Custer in the Battle
of the Little Bighorn.

Chief Joseph
|
The leader of the Nez Perce Tribe in the 1860-70s.
His people had been driven from their homeland in Idaho.
He led his people on a 1000 mile treck to get back there.
He had to evade, and sometime fight, the US Army.
He was finally captured in 1877.
He eventually settled on the Colville Reservation.
He died at Nespelem in 1904.

Pocahontas
|
A Powhatan Indian woman who is supposed to
have saved Captain John Smith (the leader of the Jamestown
Colony) from death in 1608.
She married John Rolfe, another settler, in 1613.
She sailed to England in 1616, but died a year later.
Her son, Thomas Rolfe, returned to Virginia, where he
became wealthy.

Sequoia
|
A Cherokee Indian, born in 1760. He invented a
Cherokee alphabet which enabled his people
to read and write. The government named the redwoods
of California after him.

Sitting Bull
|
A leader of the Oglala Sioux. On June 25, 1876 he

Squanto
|
A Wamopanoag Indian who helped the
Pilgrims when they landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620.
They would not have survived the winter
without his help.
