Superintendent's Message - June 2007

Dear Wellpinit Community:

Thank you, one and all, for the tremendous support the school has received from many of you! I could write a lengthy note if I mentioned everyone who partnered with the District by name, but I would be remiss if I did not highlight a few. There are so many who deserve accolades. I look forward to continued partnership and interagency agreements as we move forward with our new mission and vision. The hard work of the Committee, "Creating a Culture of Continuous Improvement" has not gone unnoticed and we will continue working on consolidating our goals with input from many of you.

The Elders have been a huge asset to our curriculum and extremely complimentary of our staff and young people on all of the events they have attended—what an encouragement. The Tribal Council has been working well with the school and we look forward to further collaboration as we tackle serious issues. The School Board has been working very hard on updating and adapting Washington State policies. Thanks go to my assistant, Rosemary, for faithfully recording all minutes and informing me of all the positive contributions many departments have made to the Healthy Nation Coalition. Special mention should be made for Francesca Firstwater, who has ably directed this grant, and who will continue to contribute her time and talents on a voluntary basis as she is able to do so, to keep this active group moving toward a healthy community. The Language and Culture Departments, especially Marsha Wynecoop, have been very involved in the school curriculum this year and are making all kinds of opportunities available to our staff and students. We thank them in advance for conducting our Culture Week.

Summer School has been well-organized this year by Peggy Muse, and the staff is rearing to begin June 18.

All in all it has been a very good year, despite the tough issues that had to be addressed. Our Principal, Terry Bartolino, her Assistants, Gail Daniels, and Les Hegney, have worked hard to keep parents, staff, and students informed and engaged. All our staff are very dedicated professionals who continue to make steps in making this a great school. Several of them have received employee awards for their outstanding contributions. I am pleased to report that the student’s WASL scores have improved. Our art and music departments have been active. I hope all of you go see the photography exhibit at the MAC, open until July 1. We are very proud of our students and Kristin Capp, the photography instructor, spoke highly of Wellpinit staff and community. She said "Wellpinit is a special place, community, staff and students are wonderful, and what’s happening up there is special." She has never felt as welcomed in any other place she has been to previously.

An athletics update from Larry Quisano makes exciting reading too:

Some changes – Dan McCanna is retiring. We thank him and Shelly Sonnabend for their tireless efforts in Alliance. This year we have seven graduates from our local Alliance program and TWENTY students in our senior Graduation ceremony on Saturday. Karen Wensel, is moving to California after working six years here, one year in the grants office and five years in the classroom. Pam King, is continuing her studies as a certified teacher and will assist with subbing as time permits.

Next year the 5th grade is moving back into the portables and will be under the Elementary School jurisdiction again. Based on community and staff input, we are confident that this will be a good move.

Thank you, for your advice and care for our students. We all want what is best for them and will do everything possible to work toward their success. This administration encourages your involvement and we listen to suggestions made through the Parent Student Teacher Committee, and other sources, especially if they are positive to help bring about the shared goals and vision of the Wellpinit School District.

Have a great summer.
Keep reading our website and encouraging one another.

Tim Ames, Superintendent
